Instructions for Accessing a Volunteer Driver
  1. Mille Lacs County residents generally must qualify for and be on MA, GAMC, Title XX or one of the four managed care programs: U-Care, Medica, Blue Plus or Health Partners.
  2. Ride requests must be made at least One Working Day in advance.  Please give as much advance notice as is possible. It may take several calls to set up a driver and confirm back to you the driver's name and pick-up time.
  3. If you have a managed care company as your provider, you will need to request your ride through them.  They will approve the ride and fax us the information.  We will arrange the ride and confirm with you the driver's name and pick-up time.
  4. For every ride we will need the following information:
      -Name
      -Address
      -Phone Number
-Directions to your home or the pick up address
      -Date of Birth
-Date & Time of your Appointment
-How long the Appointment will be
-Name, Address, Phone number and directions to your destination
  5. Ride requests for Title XX must be approved by a social/financial worker from Mille Lacs County.
  6. MLPT does have a Private Pay option for ride requests that do not qualify for any of the listed providers.  Please ask our dispatcher for details.
  7. MLPT also provides information on a number of
    transportation providers in the county.

Volunteer Driver Service Guidelines

  • MLPT provides volunteer rides to Mille Lacs County Residents for medical appointments and other necessary trips or for Private Pay by special arrangement.
  • Make reservations as early as possible by calling the numbers listed. (24 hour notice required)
  • Please be ready 15 minutes before and after the scheduled p/u time and in sight of the volunteer driver. The driver will not wait more than ten minutes for riders to appear. Drivers will not go in search of the scheduled rider.
  • Volunteer Driver’s are not generally able to take passengers requiring a wheelchair. Riders using wheelchairs must be able to transfer themselves from the wheelchair to the car and we encourage an attendant to travel with the rider. Drivers may be able to offer some assistance to get into or out of buildings.
  • Minors are required to have an adult accompany them unless special arrangements have been made. Companions and/or children ride free of charge. Volunteer Drivers do not furnish car seats and will not be responsible for belting children in.
  • No eating, drinking or smoking is allowed in the Volunteer Driver’s vehicle. Parents please make sure to pick up after children.
  • Drivers are not permitted to enter any rider’s home. Please do not request that they do so.
  • In case of severe weather, volunteer drivers make the determination about whether a ride will go or not.
  • MLPT reserves the right to refuse service to anyone whom the driver feels may endanger their safety.
  • MLPT does have a “No-Show” policy that could mean temporary loss of riding privileges for repeatedly requesting rides and not going.
  • If you must cancel a ride call our offices immediately. If the cancellation comes in too late, your provider will be charged for a no-show. No-shows adversely affect your ability to get future rides.
